The “Big Garden”

Lettuce and onions are always the first produce to come out of the garden! My favorite to grow is the Gurney’s Seed “Premium Lettuce Blend” because it seems to have every variety you could ever want! My grandfather’s is Gurney’s “Green Ice” so we grow both!

Our vegetable garden this year is extra special. It’s been 4 years since I’ve been able to garden with my grandfather, BigDaddy. Thanks to his hard dedication to physical therapy, my grandmother’s patience, and some fine doctors he is able to supervise again! Hehe! Plus, this is Mr. Herbs first time putting out a “Big Garden”! I’ve never seen someone plow up a garden so well!

I started gardening when I was 3. I was 6 when my grandfather handed me my own set of tweezers and a seed packet. I remember it vividly. He didn’t allow people to help when it came to his seed starting. I understand this because I have a hard time relinquishing control of it now. When he actually allowed me to help it left a big impression.

We started in winter going through seed catalogs. There were numerous seed books that I remember. We’d write down the things we wanted from each and then call each order in (ah, the good ole days). Gurney’s is the only one we still trust to fill the entire garden with. Oh, AND you can still call or mail your orders in as well as order online!
