The Fall Garden
Happy Fall Gardening, Y’all!
The fall garden is in full swing. I’m so excited to share with you a list of what I have planted as well as some awesome pumpkin harvest pictures!
This year we planted Big Max Pumpkins and I couldn’t be more pleased! The vines were healthy and quick growing. They are still producing more pumpkins than we know what to do with!
Aside from the pumpkins, we also have planted/are planting these items:
Gurney’s Winter Wonderland Kale
Redarling Hybrid Brussels Sprouts
Many of the items listed above are colder weather crops that can be sown again early in the spring. Broccoli, turnips, kale, parsnips, carrots, beets, and Brussels all adore cooler temps. So much so that in my zone (7a) I have had them survive all winter and begin thriving again in the spring! Of course that requires a mild to average winter!
Right now is a wonderful time to get your bulbs in the ground. Garlic planting for me happens around October 15th. I recommend this variety from Gurney’s. The taste is spot on and the color is beautiful to look at!
You will also notice above that I have berry bushes and asparagus listed. Fall planting is recommended for both. Last year I planted Marion Berries in the fall and they are thriving beautifully in my garden.
Now, back to those GLORIOUS Big Max Pumpkins! I’m
Still in awe we grew all of these! In years past we’ve had pumpkins but nothing like this! It’s a combination of good seeds, weed control, and a wet growing season.
Below you’ll see a picture from 2017 of my grandfather and I in our pumpkin patch. We were so proud of our one big pumpkin!
And this is a picture from yesterday! I’m amazed at our harvest and how it’s grown in size and quantity over the years! I think those smiles say it all!
